SISIP FS has long been a steadfast supporter and regular contributor to the March 1st “I Quit” challenge, and was therefore present at the National Draw (March 30, 2010) and Closing ceremony (April 16, 2010). These gatherings also served to enlighten attendees as to the goals and achievements of the programs of the Canadian Forces Health and Fitness Strategy, which this year celebrates its 2nd anniversary.
As a component of the Butt Out program, the March 1st “I Quit” is just one of the campaigns within their broader range of programs which include Addiction Awareness and Prevention, Injury Prevention and Active Living, Nutritional Wellness, Social Wellness. In the words of Director Forces Health Protection, Colonel MacKay, the purpose is “to build on a culture of health and fitness consciousness within the Canadian Forces (CF).”
At the National Draw, the Deputy Surgeon General Col Bernier, focused on the importance of the tobacco reduction program as “yet another instrument contributing to the operational readiness of the Armed Forces”. He further mentioned that although tobacco accounts for 9% of deaths within the CF in the last 25 years, it was encouraging to note that since 2002 there has been a 2% decrease in the amount of tobacco users within the CF. These are true, measurable results, which are only possible when all elements come together; bases and wings, the chain of command, medical personnel and PSP, to name a few, were credited for their efforts and support in promoting the campaign at the local level, as were SISIP FS and CANEX for their financial backing through the years.
During her presentation, Addiction specialist, Deanne Chafe reminded the audience that the March first “I quit” challenge aims at helping everyone quit the use of all tobacco products. The data and information provided were clear indicators of the widespread recognition the campaign has garnered through the years. Indeed, despite the operational tempo and the involvement of the CF in the Olympics and rescue operations in Haiti, this year’s participation was actually up by over 100 participants compared to last year. Halifax registered the most participants (118) with Ottawa in second place (85); not surprisingly the National 1st and 2nd prize winners were from Halifax and Ottawa respectively. In the words of SISIP FS President André Bouchard, who at the Closing Ceremony presented the 2nd prize of the National Draw to Louise McIntyre from Ottawa: “it is a privilege to contribute – almost $90,000 since 2003– to an initiative ultimately aimed at further enhancing the morale and welfare of our CF.”
While participation figures are very encouraging and the 2% decrease in tobacco use is a very positive move, Colonel MacKay admits: “We are not done yet!” Quitting for good rarely occurs on the first try – it can take up to 7 times – therefore, returning year after year, the March 1st “I quit” campaign serves as a further opportunity, an incentive to try again with the proper level of support and motivation; as mentioned by Strengthen the Forces National Manager Debra Reid: “The true winners are the Canadian Forces!”
